In the fall of 2019, ACEs Aware launched the “Becoming ACEs Aware in California” online health care provider training. Beginning July 1, 2020, to receive Medi-Cal payment, providers must have completed a certified Core Training and attested to the state that they have completed it. In June 2020, First 5 San Benito and the Family Impact Center Resiliency Network Advisory were awarded an ACEs Aware grant to promote information about screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and target different provider specialties and types of providers, and to offer training in more interactive mediums.

Given that attesting to completing a certified Core Training qualifies Medi-Cal providers for payment, it is critical that any Core Training curriculum provides comprehensive and evidence-based information and guidance on how to effectively screen for ACEs in order to assess risk for toxic stress and respond with evidence-based interventions, including implementing trauma-informed care.
